Sean Spicer’s political career began long before he served as the 30th White House Press Secretary and made his mark as one of the most recognized staffers in the Trump administration. Sean built a decades-long career in Republican politics, witnessing and shaping the inner workings of Washington, DC, from every vantage point: as a House of Representatives communicator, heading up incumbent retention at the National Republican Congressional Committee, in George W. Bush’s White House as Assistant U.S. Trade Representative, as the Chief Strategist and Director of Communications at the Republican National Committee, top advisor to presidential campaigns, and of course, White House Press Secretary. Sean made his way up through the ranks and has experience at every level in Washington. Few are as well-equipped as Sean to pull back the curtain and dissect what’s really happening in the nation’s capital.

Sean is the host of the Sean Spicer Show which streams on all podcast platforms weeknights and airs on the FirstTV network at 7pm ET and the co-host of THE HUDDLE which streams live weekday mornings at 8:30am ET.  He is also a political contributor to NewsNation and Sky News Australia.

He is the President of RigWil LLC, a strategic consulting firm that provides insights and public affairs strategies to C-suite corporate and association executives. Additionally, he is a founding Partner of point1, a mail, digital, and consulting firm that works with top Republican candidates in key races across the country.

After leaving the White House in 2017, President Trump appointed him to the Commission on White House Fellows.  In August 2019, President Trump announced Sean’s appointment to the Board of Visitors at the US Naval Academy.  In September 2021, in an unprecedented move, President Biden dismissed Sean and all of President Trump’s service academy appointees.  Sean was lead plaintiff in a subsequent lawsuit, Spicer v Biden, which set the legal precedent that allowed President Trump to dismiss all of Biden’s nominees when he returned to office.  On March 7, 2025 President Trump reappointed Sean to serve another term on the Board of Visitors of the US Naval Academy.  Sean was named to the Board of Directors of Old Glory Bank in March 2025, 

Sean has traveled the world addressing groups, corporations, forums, schools and associations and served as a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics during the 2017-2018 academic year. He is the author of  four books including the New York Times bestselling book The Briefing, Leading America, Radical Nation and the bestselling children’s book The Parrots Go Bananas. 

Sean is a lifelong Republican operative and anyone who has worked with him knows him as relentless, quick-witted and loyal. He built his career working passionately on campaigns, in the administration, and for the Republican Party. His role in reshaping the Republican National Committee’s PR strategy helped the party rebuild after losses in 2012. In 2014 he helped lead the party to sweeping victories. In 2016, prior to the must-see Republican primary debates, Sean worked on behalf of the party to restructure the debate format creating a role for the national party working with networks, campaigns and other partners to produce a schedule and debate ground rules that prompted higher quality, informative and fair debate that broke records for TV viewership. Sean’s efforts as the RNC’s Chief Strategist and Communications Director landed him a spot in PR Week’s Power 15 list for 2016, as he helped the RNC generate approximately $1.4 billion in earned media that cycle. 

After Trump became the Republican nominee, Sean split his time between his role at the RNC and on the Trump campaign in New York City. Sean played a pivotal role in the party’s improbable wins across the country that November.

Sean has been active in a number of causes supporting veterans, adoption, and cancer research. He previously sat on the Board of Directors of two veteran service organizations: the Yellow Ribbon Fund and Independence Fund, During the Summer of 2019 Sean made several stops on Florida Georgia Line’s ‘Cant Say I Aint Country’ Tour to present all terrain tracked wheel chairs to wounded service members on behalf of the Independence Fund.

Despite not having a single ounce of rhythm in his body, Sean adeptly used his campaign skills to rally the audience and make it to the quarterfinals on Season 28 of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.  In 2021, he made an appearance in Zach Snyder’s box office hit film Army of the Dead. 

Sean is a Rhode Island native and holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and serves as a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. A husband and father of two, he resides in Virginia but remains a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

Explore Brick Market Alley

After your harbor tour, take a stroll through Brick Market Alley. Continue down America’s Cup Avenue to Bowen’s and Bannister’s Wharfs. Here, you can indulge in a bowl of chowder at the Black Pearl – a must-try, though perhaps not worth a full meal.

Midday Shopping and Sightseeing

Lower Thames Street

Head to lower Thames Street for some more shopping. Walk as far as O’Brien’s Bar (a pet and family friendly place to stop for lunch, dinner or drinks) to explore local stores and boutiques.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Tennis Hall of Fame

Continue up America’s Cup Avenue, which becomes Memorial Drive, and visit St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the historic site where the Kennedys were married. Just a few blocks further, you’ll find the Tennis Hall of Fame on Bellevue Avenue. While the museum is best for tennis aficionados, the grass courts are worth a look. Nearby, you’ll find more shopping opportunities (antiques and men’s and women’s clothing). (There are plenty of places to stop for a quick bite on Bellvue but next to the  Car museum is Cru which has great pastries, salads and sandwiches and ample seating)

Newport Lobster Shack

For a casual and affordable lobster meal, head to the Newport Lobster Shack at the bottom of Long Wharf, around the corner from the Marriott and across from the Wyndham. This outdoor/very casual spot offers fresh seafood without the long lines or need for reservations.

Coffee Break

Coffee lovers should check out Springline Coffee on Bannister’s Wharf, a cozy spot with views of the harbor just down from the Black Pearl.

Afternoon Adventures

Easton’s Beach (First Beach)

Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach (Second is further down the road…and Third is, you guessed it, a little further) is about half a mile further down the road after Bellevue. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the ocean.

Lunch/Dinner options near First Beach: 

Tickets: very family friendly outdoor and indoor seating, typical bar food with seafood options.  Flo’s Clam Shack: a Rhode Island Institution for clams, clam cakes, chowder (Pro tip: New England Clam Chowder is cream based, Rhode Island Chowder is broth based).  Mission Burger: Best burger on the Island - not even close.  

Ice Cream:  many options up and down Thames Street but Clementine’s near First Beach is in a league of its own.

Mansion Tours

No trip to Newport is complete without touring the famous mansions. The Breakers and The Elms are top recommendations, showcasing the opulent summer homes of America’s wealthy families like the Vanderbilts. Save the Bay Aquarium

Cliff Walk

Take a stroll down Cliff Walk (access off Memorial Drive near First Beach) and check out the Brreakers, Salve Regina College. It can be a bit rugged so be prepared.

Catch a Newport Gulls game at Cardine’s Field (20 America’s Cup Avenue). This college baseball league offers fun and affordable entertainment for families.

Ryan’s Family Arcade

If it rains, head to Ryan’s Family Arcade on Thames Street, across from Bowen’s and Bannister’s Wharf, for some indoor fun.

Sailing:  

Newport is the sailing capital of the world and hosted the America’s Cup until 1983.  There is a new Sailing Museum on lower Thames. You can charter several large boats in the harbor - Madeline is a pleasure cruise option based out of Bowen’s Wharf and the old 12 Metre America’s Cup boats can also be chartered.  Sail Newport is a public sailing facility located in Ft. Adams state park where lessons and rentals are available.

Scenic Views

Castle Hill offers stunning views of Newport and the bay. Though reservations can be tough and it’s pricey, it’s worth visiting for a drink on the Adirondack chairs on the lawn with views of the ocean. OceanCliff next door is another great option.

Must Get:

Del’s lemonade is a must during your visit.  Trucks run throughout the city but there is also a stand at the corner of America’s Cup Ave and Lower Thames.  

Lobster Rolls are another Newport institution - the best deal (they do large orders too) is the Snack Bar at Second Beach, Salty’s (www.twinrolls.com).

Day trips:

There are ferries to Block Island (about 55 minutes on the high speed ferry) and Providence from Perrotti Park (where the shuttle goes out from) and a high speed ferry to Martha’s Vineyard from Quonset Point.
