The official White House schedule has the president arriving the Capitol at 8:40pm, beginning at 9:10pm and leaving the Capitol at 11:20pm. You read that right.
So maybe they are just screwing with the Democrat response (Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin) or he is going to go long.
I say he is going long.
The first speech in a president’s term isn’t a State of the Union, its a Joint Address to Congress. The thinking is that a president will usually have only been in office a month or so and therefore can’t really provide a true update of the state the union which is what is called for in the constitution.
(Fun fact, it used to be in writing and there is nothing that says it actually has to be at the Capitol although I think Trump loves the pomp and circumstance).
The difference is Trump has a bunch of stuff to report on with respect to the State of the Union. He probably has done more in the first 30 days that any modern president has whether you like him or not.
So here is how I think this goes down.
