A Missed Step, a Broken Ankle, and a Very Forced Lesson in Patience
If you watched the show this week, you might have noticed I was broadcasting from a slightly different setup - or maybe you just wondered where I’ve been over the last few days.
Last Saturday night, I was walking down a flight of outdoor stairs heading from a neighbor’s house to my daughter’s soccer game. I missed a single step. In a split second, my right ankle went one direction, my left leg and tendons went another, and my weekend plans were instantly replaced with a trip to the emergency room. By Friday, I was in the operating room undergoing surgery.
The reality of the diagnosis? For the next few months - yes, you read that right, months - my left leg is going to be locked in a full brace.
For a guy who is used to moving at 100 miles an hour and traveling non-stop, being forced to slow down is a massive reality check. Simple daily tasks are suddenly major logistics operations, and my reliance on the people around me is going to reach levels that are, frankly, pretty challenging for a fiercely independent person.
Lying in bed recovering gives you a lot of time to reflect. As I’ve been sitting here, I’ve come away with a few hard personal rules and post-recovery resolutions - starting with one major bad habit we all fall into: procrastination.
