It’s All About the E
I got into an interesting conversation at dinner this week and then the very same topic subsequently came up on the Morning Meeting the following morning.
It was about the E in DEI.
It’s always been the E that’s the problem. Diversity of thought and opinion is good. I like to hear different perspectives when I making a decision. What class should I take in college? What should we have for dinner? Where should we go on vacation?
Even for the simplest decisions we make we generally like different - diverse - opinions to shape out outcome. It doesn’t mean we weigh them all equally but at least I know I like to hear a variety of ideas. For what its worth when I get asked what is something we don’t know about President Trump I usually say that unlike what the media presents, Trump loves to - actually welcomes — competing ideas and perspectives.
Inclusion is also generally a positive quality. That’s what teamwork is all about. You want co-workers, teammates and friends to feel included in key decisions.
I don’t think many people have a problem with those two ends of DEI.
E is the issue.
The E is DEI stands for equity. When I asked google for a definition this is what I got back: Equality: the state of being equal, especially in status, rights and opportunities.
Equal. Sounds nice right? Very fair — I get what you get.
But that’s not really fair when you think about it is it? It’s also not what America promised.
The promise is O — opportunity.
We should have opportunity not equity as a guaranteed outcome.
Let me take this a bit further.
