SNL hits a new LOW…
I usually don’t care much about Saturday Night Live — every once in a while I’ll see a clip on X the morning after it airs, but generally it’s not on my radar.
But their choice of a cold open for last Saturday’s show stopped me in my tracks.
The skit — the one they chose to start the show — kicked off Holy Week by brazenly mocking Easter and Jesus.
Titled “The Cleansing of the Temple,” the open presented a tableau of the biblical story, which was quickly interrupted by “Trump,” (played by James Austin Johnson). The skit used this pantomime of Trump to distastefully mock Jesus and Easter.
In theory this is nothing new.
SNL and all the other mainstream variety or comedy shows have always poked fun at Republican figures and conservative values.
Mocking the right is these shows’ bread and butter.
But mocking Jesus and Easter? This cold open was a step too far.
The flippant disrespect that the skit showed towards Christianity — just a couple days before Holy Week — is nothing short of disgusting.
At one point in the sketch, in the midst of a bit attacking tariffs, “Trump” (Johnson) quipped “The stock market did a Jesus; it died, then on the third day it was risen. And then on the fourth day it died again, possibly never to return — just like Jesus.”
As if we needed another reason not to watch SNL.
