The problem I have with the "both sides" argument - especially in this specific moment - is that it's an attempt for the left to deflect any responsibility by portraying themselves as a victim. Over the last decade the left has bullied the right with hateful words, threats, lawfare, riots, de-banking, silencing their voices, destruction of property, and physical violence. I might be in a bubble, but I have not observed anywhere near the same coming from the right.
Statements from the left saying we need to take down the temperature seem hollow. The left may never acknowledge their role in this tragedy, let alone apologize. But a sincere effort by reasonable people on the left to start working with reasonable people on the right would go much further than any words. If all the left offers is unilateral resistance of every common sense initiative Republicans are trying to accomplish, political tensions and societal volatility will persist.
